Hazardous waste statistics are not very...
pleasant to look at. We produce more than 400 million tons each year. Read on below to see how many thousand percent the production of manmade chemicals has increased in just one generation.

Top 3 facts about hazardous waste

13 tons every single second

Hazardous wastes are wastes that can cause substantial threats to our health and the environment. And we produce a lot of it - more than 400 million tons each year.

Numbers are increasing

This is almost 60 kg for every single person in the world - and the amount is increasing. In just one generation the production of man-made chemicals has increased by 40,000% from 1 million to 400 million tons.

Where does it come from?

Hazardous waste also comes from products that we use every day, for example, batteries, cosmetics, cleaning products, paints, pharmaceuticals, electronics…

Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste is waste that poses substantial or potential threats to public health or the environment. There are four factors that determine whether or not a substance is hazardous: ignitability (i.e., flammable), reactivity, corrosivity, toxicity. In addition “hazardous waste” has the potential to: cause, or significantly contribute to an increase in mortality (death) or an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating reversible illness; or pose a substantial (present or potential) hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, or disposed of, or otherwise managed. We produce about 400 million tons of hazardous waste each year. (Wikipedia refers to data from the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the report: Schmit, 1999. We use the estimate from UNEP/Wikipedia but have not been able to locate the report. If you can help us please let us know).
